Florida Hurricanes And Home Preparedness: Generac Generators

March 26, 2024

People live in Florida because they love its warm weather, salty ocean air, natural beauty, and abundant sunlight. But Sunshine State’s subtropical climate also comes with frequent hurricanes and tropical storms whose punishing winds, violent lightning strikes, and powerful storm surges can bring devastation in moments. And, it’s not only Florida’s coastal communities that are vulnerable. As hurricanes move inland, their battering wind and heavy rain down power lines and damage critical infrastructure, leaving homeowners without power for days and even weeks.

Preparedness is key to preventing catastrophes caused by power outages. This is why contacting Canter Power Systems for Generac generator installation in Florida is a smart move. Generac is the leading manufacturer of whole-home generators in the industry and that means you’ll never have to worry when storm clouds gather. You’ll always have the electricity you need. Canter Power’s status as a Generac Power Pro Premier Dealer in Florida means we can connect you to the solution that’s right for you.

Florida Hurricanes and Power Outages

Florida’s location between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico puts it right in the path of devastating tropical storms and hurricanes. Some of the most noteworthy examples of hurricanes to hit Florida within the last 10 years include:

  • Hurricane Matthew moved along the eastern coast of Florida in October 2016, creating wind gusts of up to 106 miles per hour, damaging Kennedy Space Center and knocking out power for more than 1.3 million residents.
  • Irma made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane in September 2017 with sustained winds of 130 mph. It caused or contributed to at least 87 deaths in the state, with storm damage heaviest in the Florida Keys and record flooding in northeastern Florida, including in Jacksonville. All in all, Hurricane Irma left an estimated $50 billion in damage.
  • In 2018, Hurricane Michael hit Mexico Beach, Florida with sustained winds of 160 mph. Such high winds made it the strongest hurricane on record to strike the Florida panhandle and the first Category 5 hurricane to hit the U.S. since 1992. 50 people lost their lives in Florida and statewide economic damage was estimated at $18.4 billion.
  • Hurricane Ian passed through Florida throughout late September 2022, first going over the Florida Keys as a Category 3 storm. Ian then rapidly intensified making landfall as a high-end Category 4 storm in Cayo Costa and Punta Gorda. Over 1 million people lost electricity as a result of the massive storm surge and widespread damage to Southwestern Florida.
