Final inspection and maintenance

March 11, 2021

You’re in the home stretch now. Finally, all of the preliminary work has been completed for the installation of your new standby generator and you have finished Coordinating Gas and Electric Utilities.  We are now at the 5th and final step of the installation process of your permanently connected appliance: final inspection and a startup-test.

At this point, you have made a substantial investment in time and money. In this blog “installation,” we’ll discuss why the final steps are important to avoid any missteps and to ensure your family benefits from years and years of reliable home protection.

At the conclusion of the electrical connection, the generator should be started, and all components tested and verified for proper operation. Upon the testing and certification of the generator system, your installer will demonstrate the operation of the generator system and provide you with the owner’s manual and any other documentation you may need. If you have any questions, your specialist will go through all aspects of operation with you.

Once your generator system has been tested and certified, your installation contractor will request a final inspection from the municipal electrical inspection office.

Please note: As mentioned throughout this guide, in most cases, the homeowner must be at home for all inspections. And although your specialist will advise you on the availability of the electrical inspector, most inspection departments require direct contact with the homeowner in scheduling specific appointments.

Keep in mind that every individual inspector has their own interpretation of the National Electrical and Gas codes. That means you may find that your inspector requests additional work to be performed. These requests are not uncommon and are part of the process of ensuring that your generator meets all code requirements and will operate safely. The top priority for everyone involved is installing your generator correctly to avoid disasters like electrocution, fire, or other liabilities. If your inspector requires additional work, your installation contractor will make any necessary schedule changes to complete the process.

Conclusion

The installation of a standby generator ranks as one of the most complex residential projects that most homeowners will ever undertake. The buyer’s guide and this blog were created to educate consumers on each of the steps required for successful and worry-free installation.

When choosing a licensed contractor to install a generator in your home, it is important to do your homework: choose a company that is experienced, reputable, and offers comprehensive service beyond the installation process. Making wise choices throughout this complicated process can make the difference between your family’s security and protection or being left in the dark.

An added layer of peace of mind you should consider is 24/7 remote monitoring.

This connects your generator to a cellular network and allows you to see vital information about your system anytime you want from a mobile app. Get real-time and historical information about your standby generator. You’ll be able to access information such as the current operating status, maintenance schedule, and much more directly from your smartphone, tablet, or computer.

Having your generator connected also helps remote technicians efficiently troubleshoot or diagnose any issue before it becomes a problem. This is truly a must-have for anyone looking for complete confidence in their generator system.

Now that your generator has been installed, tested, and passed all inspections, you can look forward to weathering any storm with your new standby generator for many years to come.  And, as always, a dedicated Customer Experience Coordinator will continue to be available for any needs or questions you may have.
