Canter Electric Company was created in 1948. Its founder, Glen W. Canter, began the business with a pickup truck, a roll of wire, a handful of lighting sockets, and a package of light bulbs. During those days it was a major project just to get electricity from the closest utility pole to a home or business. The electrical contractor was responsible for stringing wires through trees and across creeks and valleys just to create an opportunity to have a single light in the kitchen.
Canter Electric Company grew to become one of the largest electrical construction contractors in North Carolina during the 1960’s and 70’s.
From 1982 to 2002, Kenneth Canter worked to develop a multistate, single source, electrical service and repair business for clients such as NationsBank, Wachovia, Walmart, Kmart, McDonald’s, Burger King, and many others. Through the request of their clients, CEC began offering installation, repair, and maintenance of standby generator systems.
During the winter of 2001/2002, after personally experiencing two severe ice/snow storms and a week and a half without heat or lights, Kenneth began researching standby generator systems for his own home. In May, 2002, Kenneth had a standby generator system installed at his home. That experience was the basis of an entire new segment of the Company’s business.
From 2002 through 2014, Canter Electric Company’s focus on residential standby generator systems was the catalyst for the unprecedented growth and achievements experienced throughout this period. During this time, Canter Electric Company received yearly Sales Achievement awards from Generac, as well as many other prestigious accolades.
